This report presents data on median household income and the Gini index of income inequality based on the 2022 and 2023 American Community Surveys (ACS). Estimates from the 2023 ACS show a decrease in real median household income for four states and for three of the 25 most populous metropolitan areas.
Estimates from the 2022 ACS show a statistically significant decrease in median household income at the national level and for 17 states. Median household income decreased between 2021 and 2022 for 8 of the 25 most populous metropolitan areas.
