University of Michigan Law School students here to answer your questions about student life here! This panel is specifically focused on student life here at Michigan--there are plans to hopefully have to other career-focused panels (Public Interest/Gov't + Firms/Private Practice) sometime in the future.
Michigan has a number of supplemental essay options (8 last year). One of them essentially allows for an addendum (essay three). Let's leave that aside for a moment, as my general advice would be "write it if it is appropriate, but don't think of it as a true Michigan supplemental essay if you're just copying and pasting the same GPA/LSAT/etc ...
In a stressful last minute acceptance with scholarship to Michigan law school I am attempt to make a decision about a school I have never been able to visit. I was wondering if anyone here who attends or is attending Michigan law would be willing to provide more information on their thought? Edit: thank you for the input.
Essentially, for a good chunk of the mid 20th century, Michigan occupied the place of Stanford in the current iteration of the T3 (at least according to Brian Leiter, who is a Michigan Law grad so he maybe be biased): “In 1970, the top five law schools were Harvard, Yale, and Michigan, with Columbia, Stanford, and Chicago fighting it out for the remaining two spots.
I had a couple of law-adjacent experiences after college (landlord tenant disputes, unpaid wage things, etc) and I described how I had really enjoyed reading the relevant laws to fight those "cases". Michigander here. Winter is rough and long. No sugar coating it. Fortunately there are tons of indoor activities, even in the law school buildings (ping pong, foosball tables, & chess boards in the law library annex.) I’ll be hitting those up, as well as the indoor Pickleball courts, all winter. Feel free to join in on the fun!
Michigan. Visited both. Vibes are absolutely solid at both places. I just felt better in Michigan, I liked the campus better too and saw much more diversity in the students than at UVA which is definitely important for me personally. One big downside for me was Charlottesville and the part of VA it’s in.
A lot of top law schools have information sessions dedicated to just personal statements. Admissions counselors tell you what they're looking for, the biggest mistakes to avoid, what is a compelling story, etc. Michigan and Columbia Law admissions hosts "Law Statement Writing Workshops", I'm guessing other T-14s do too.
MSU law school wait-listed me, but I think I may have gotten decent offers from elsewhere because I was willing to go out of state and those schools were trying to expand their reach in Michigan. Law schools make a lot of considerations when they're building their class and it's not always as simple as GPA and LSAT.
