The overall focus at the beginning of Hermle's life was precision, multiple times in their product line they touch on the idea of precision. In the 1970 they expanded to engineering and quartz movement clocks. Hermle Clocks is a German family owned and operated company in its third generation, Rolf Hermle joined the board in 1978.
In 1970, Mutz and King sold Chelsea Clock to Automation Industries, where Chelsea became part of the marine division. Soon thereafter, Chelsea's management noted the growing popularity of less expensive European movements, leading it to introduce a line of mid-priced clocks with German-made Hermle movements.

Anchor escapement clocks driven by a mainspring required a fusee to even out the force of the mainspring. It is a recoil escapement as mentioned above; the momentum of the pendulum pushes the escape wheel backward during part of the cycle. This causes extra wear to the movement, and applies varying force to the pendulum, causing inaccuracy.
The first use of pendulums in clocks around 1656 suddenly increased the accuracy of the verge clock from hours a day to minutes a day. Most clocks were rebuilt with their foliots replaced by pendulums, [ 34 ] [ 35 ] to the extent that it is difficult to find original verge and foliot clocks intact today.
In striking clocks, the striking train is a gear train that moves a hammer to strike the hours on a gong. It is usually driven by a separate but identical power source to the going train. In antique clocks, to save costs, it was often identical to the going train, and mounted parallel to it on the left side when facing the front of the clock. [11]

The invention of the escapement was an important step in the history of technology, as it made the all-mechanical clock possible. [1]: p.514-515 [2] [3] The first all-mechanical escapement, the verge escapement, was invented in 13th-century Europe.
