The community was started by the Mennonite John Zook, who came to Larned, Kansas, in the 1880s and then moved his family to the location that would become Zook, a mile east of what is now Highway 19 in southeastern Pawnee County. [2] The community grew in population when the Anthony and Northern Railroad came through the area. [2]
The northern terminus of K-19 Spur follows the former National Old Trails Road and Old Santa Fe Trail. K-19 was first designated in 1926, and at that time started in Belpre and ended in Larned.
