It evolved from the Estonian Science Photo Competition. The first global competition took place in 2017 [5] and is held every two years, [6] occurring for most countries around November or December. [7] [8] It has been called one of the most important photo competitions in the world. [9] The main organizer of the competition is Ivo Kruusamägi.
Contests have also been run on various other Wikimedia projects, generally eliciting excitement and support; the Wikinews writing contest in March/April and the second German writing contest (part of the International writing contest) both attracted over 10 unusual prizes from the community to hand out to the lucky/skillful winners.

Editors may nominate one of their own photos taken and uploaded during the contest period at Wikipedia:WikiProject National Register of Historic Places/Fall 2011 Photo Contest Best Photo. The winner will be determined by one !vote per editor, with any editor registered on Wikipedia eligible to !vote. The winner will receive a barnstar.
