The team has been doing rips for private consumption for a few years ever since we got annoyed at many errors (like typesetting glitches) on HorribleSubs releases.
Erai releases subtitle files separately, Subsplease doesn't. Erai has HEVC releases for seasonal anime, Subsplease doesn't. Subsplease releases usually come out faster than Erai. (that's why nearly all of the streaming sites rely on Subsplease) Subsplease changes subtitle font, Erai doesn't.

My present go-to is Erai-Raws. In my experience, SubsPlease has newer shows and fast releases for current ongoing season. Erai-Raws files are larger and typically for shows that have finished airing or have come out in Blu-Ray/DVD. And Erai-Raws is good for different languages as they have multi-subs. yeah i need subsplease, even though i pay for crunchyroll and dont even watch anything thats not on crunchyroll, CR is so damn bad, the sub sync is always brocken when i watch on the site, making me have to pause resume to force a sync every 20 seconds
