Suncor Energy Inc. (French: Suncor Énergie) is a Canadian integrated energy company based in Calgary, Alberta. It specializes in production of synthetic crude from oil sands . In the 2020 Forbes Global 2000 , Suncor Energy was ranked as the 48th-largest public company in the world.
By 2013, Suncor and CNRL—Canada's two largest petroleum companies were also among top eleven of the country's most valuable companies. [13] In 2011, Canadian Natural Resources, overtook Suncor to become Canada's largest producer. Suncor produced 549,000 boe/d in 2012 only slightly higher than in 2011. [14]
The Suncor Sarnia Refinery is an 85,000 bpd cracking plant located in the "Chemical Valley" section of Sarnia, Ontario, Canada alongside the St. Clair River.The refinery has been in continuous operation since 1952 [1] and supplies petroleum products to the southern Ontario region including Toronto and its suburbs via the Sun-Canadian Pipeline. [2]
In 1981, the Government of Ontario purchased a 25% stake in the company but divested it in 1993. In 1995, Sun Oil also divested its interest in the company, although Suncor maintained the Sunoco retail brand in Canada. Suncor took advantage of these two divestitures to become an independent, widely held public company.

It sold its remaining interest in Canada's Suncor Energy in 1995 but markets products from two refineries – one in Toledo, Ohio, and the other Sarnia, Ontario – in joint ventures. [18] In 1998, Sun Company, Inc. became Sunoco, Inc. In 2011 the Toledo facility was sold to PBF Energy, Inc.
