Joseph Donald Mascis Jr. (born December 10, 1965), better known as J Mascis, is an American musician who is the singer, guitarist and main songwriter for the alternative rock band Dinosaur Jr. He has also released several albums as a solo artist and played drums and guitar on other projects.
Mascis and Sweetapple added guitar, bass, drums and backing vocal parts in studios on Western Massachusetts. While the band had a completed album and a label to release it on, it still had not settled on a name. Mascis initially suggested Heavy Blanket, a name he would later use for a side project. The band settled on Sweet Apple.
However, Mascis does not play guitar for the band; he plays his first instrument, the drums. To complete the band's line-up, Mascis and Sweetapple recruited the guitarist and vocalist Kyle Thomas (also known as King Tuff) from avant-folk group Feathers. Their eponymous debut album was released on March 7, 2006 by Tee Pee Records.
