Tails made his debut in November 1992 in both the 8-bit Sonic the Hedgehog 2 for the Sega Master System & Game Gear, and the separate but identically-titled 16-bit game Sonic the Hedgehog 2 for the Sega Genesis / Mega Drive. Yamaguchi designed Tails as part of an internal competition to create a character to serve as a sidekick to Sonic.
