La Romana is a port city ranked as Dominican Republic's seventh-largest by population (around 130,000, metro around 215,000). The city is located opposite Catalina Island, and approximately 80 kilometres (50 mi) from the national capital, Santo Domingo. Its name comes from a balance used to weigh merchandise for export.
Central Romana Corporation was established in 1912 as a subsidiary of South Puerto Rico Sugar Company. [2] In 1967, South Puerto Rico Sugar was acquired by Gulf and Western Industries, becoming part of its Gulf and Western Americas Corporation division. [3]
This harbor was formerly only for exportation of the sugar mill, but in consequence of the tourism development in the Dominican Republic, Central Romana Corporation decided to add a new tourism terminal to carry people to the Catalina Island from there. The Casa de Campo International Airport made it easier for tourists to come to La Romana.
