Tatsuhiko Katayama, their editor, was worried about the one-shot crusade being too dark for the young demographic and asked Gotouge if they could write another type of the main character who would be "brighter". Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba as a handheld wooden heirloom used by Tanjiro when dancing the Kamado family's traditional Hinokami Kagura dance. Ōkami as one of the glaives wielded by Amaterasu, the Seven Strike sword. The Ninetails also has the Ninestrike sword similarly based on the seven-branched sword but with nine prongs.
Tanjiro survives the seven days and finds only three other survivors. After receiving his starting rank and choosing the ore to make his sword, Tanjiro returns to Mt. Sagiri, where he reunites with Sakonji and a reawakened Nezuko. A swordsmith named Haganezuka arrives afterwards to give Tanjiro his sword, surprising everyone that it turns black.
