[3] The county is named either for the Ottawa (Odawa) Indigenous peoples who lived there, or for an Indigenous word meaning "trader".

The racial makeup of the township was 99.1% White, 0.3% Asian, Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.5% of the population. There were 633 households, out of which 46.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 58.8% were married couples living together, 19.8% had a female householder with no husband present.
