In 1967 Tonga crowned king Tāufaʻāhau Tupou IV, while George Tupou V was crowned in 2008 and Tupou VI in 2015. All rulers participated in elaborate ceremonies complete with a large gold crown, sceptre, and throne.

King Tāufa'āhau was succeeded by his eldest son, who became King George Tupou V. He was crowned on 1 August 2008. Tupou V died in March 2012, and was succeeded by his youngest brother, who now reigns as King 'Aho'eitu Tupou VI. King Tupou VI donned the historic crown at his own coronation on 4 July 2015.

The House of Tupou was formed in 1875 when the monarch's constitutional role was put forth. In July 2008, three days before his coronation, King George Tupou V announced that he would relinquish most of his power and be guided by his Prime Minister's recommendations on most matters. [15] The current monarch is Tupou VI.
