U.S. Route 278 (US 278) in the U.S. state of Georgia is an east–west United States Highway traversing the north-central portion of the state. The highway travels from the Alabama state line near Esom Hill to the South Carolina state line where it crosses the Savannah River in the Augusta metropolitan area.
Outside the Perimeter, US 278 runs along Covington Highway. In Lithonia, Georgia, at the intersection with Turner Hill Road , US 278 merges with I-20 for 15 miles (24 km). It leaves I-20 at exit 90, in Covington, Georgia. US 278 is co-signed with a state route for its entire length in Georgia, as are all U.S. Highways in the state.
SR 278 was established in 1950 along the same alignment as it takes today. In this year the section of SR 278 in Bleckley County was paved. [2] [3] The rest of the route was paved in 1970. [7] [8] The highway has not experienced any major changes to its routing since 1970. [6] [8]

Starting Monday, commuters can expect construction at the intersection of U.S. 278 and S.C. 170. The construction will happen all week during daytime hours.
Route was relocated to Mars Hill Road in 1972 and was extended south along part of SR 6 Business (Old US 278) to end at current US 278 in 1985. It was relocated to part of Richard D. Sailors Parkway in 2001 when SR 6 Business was decommissioned.
