David Henry Power (16 January 1947 – 8 July 2024) was an Irish bookmaker. Power's grandfather started bookmaking in Tramore , County Waterford in 1896, having earlier worked as a draper. [ 1 ] The business passed to his son, Paddy, who died suddenly in 1963, leaving it to his son David.
The business is owned 52% by the former Paddy Power shareholders and 48% by the former Betfair shareholders. [7] The merger was completed on 2 February 2016. [ 8 ] On 5 April 2016, it was announced that 650 jobs in the United Kingdom and Ireland would be lost at the company.
In September 2015 he then led the merger of Betfair with his former employer Paddy Power, for which the Sunday Times named him its 2015 Businessperson of the Year.
