Typographical symbols and punctuation marks are marks and symbols used in typography with a variety of purposes such as to help with legibility and accessibility, or to identify special cases. Legibility is the ease with which a reader can decode symbols. In addition to written language, it can also refer to behaviour [1] or architecture, [2] for example. From the perspective of communication research, it can be described as a measure of the permeability of a communication channel. A large number of known factors can affect legibility.
In contrast, a character entity reference refers to a character by the name of an entity which has the desired character as its replacement text. Legibility describes how easily individual characters can be distinguished from one another. It is described by Walter Tracy as "the quality of being decipherable and recognisable". [ 45 ] For instance, if a b and an h , or a 3 and an 8 , are difficult to distinguish at small sizes, this is a problem of legibility. [ 45 ]
