Richard Burton Matheson (February 20, 1926 – June 23, 2013) was an American author and screenwriter, primarily in the fantasy, horror, and science fiction genres. He is best known as the author of I Am Legend , a 1954 science fiction horror novel that has been adapted for the screen three times.

The plot is based on a short story of the same name written by Richard Matheson and first published in the May 1956 edition of Playboy magazine. The episode was a follow-up to the departure of main character Cleveland Brown, who was removed from Family Guy to become the center of the spin-off The Cleveland Show .
