Bunad (Norwegian: [ˈbʉ̂ːnɑd], plural: bunader/bunadar) is a Norwegian umbrella term. In a broader sense, the term encompasses household, householding equipment, and livestock as well as both traditional rural clothes (mostly dating to the 18th and 19th centuries) and modern 20th-century folk costumes. Over large parts of the bunad, including the belt and apron, there is embroidery in the local style. The embroidery technique is known in Norway as Hardangersøm. The bunads are made of different fabrics. The colored aprons are, for example, in cotton, wool, linen or silk, with patterns depending on local tradition.
In the period between 1650-1850 Hardangersom (meaning: work from Hardanger area) flourished in Norway.Flax was grown, carded, spun and woven into white fabric and thread which was used to make and decorate traditional Norwegian costume items called bunads (national costumes) as well as other items of clothing and household linens such as mats, curtains and bedspreads.
