The country's longest-running series of varsity matches is played between the University of Oxford and the University of Cambridge.In addition to the 1827 University Match in Cricket mentioned above, the first "Boat Race" in 1829 [4] the first "Varsity Match" (in Rugby Union) in 1872, [5] and the first "Varsity Game" (in Basketball) in 1921 were all contested between Oxford and Cambridge.
The team played as Irish Free State between 1924 and 1935. The name Football Association of Ireland was re-adopted in 1936, and from then until 1954, they played as Ireland ; since 1954 they have been Republic of Ireland following the renaming of the team by FIFA, to distinguish them from Northern Ireland .
This was the first time an Irish player had scored more than one goal in total in the World Cup Finals. Robbie Keane eventually went on to score three goals in the competition. Ireland drew in their first match against Cameroon and in their second match they drew again against the tournaments runner up Germany. In Ireland's final group match, they defeated Saudi Arabia, their second ever victory in a World Cup, and progressed to the round of 16. There, they met Spain, and lost in a penalty shoot-out.

For example, the first recorded water polo match in history was played between Oxford and Cambridge in 1891. The women's rugby Varsity Match was first played in 1988 and has taken place at Twickenham on the same day as the men's game since 2015. [4]
