Installed in Chicago's Grant Park, in the U.S. state of Illinois, the statue and pedestal sit atop a memorial mound, with a ceremonial stairway leading to the summit. The statue was a notable meeting location for anti-Vietnam War protests in the 1960s, including during the 1968 Democratic National Convention .
Standing tall at 30 feet, Eagle Columns consists of three columnar sculptures fixed on a geometric base. This public sculpture honors John Peter Altgeld (1847–1902), who served as Illinois governor from 1893 to 1897 and made significant contributions to social reform.
Monument with Standing Beast is a sculpture by Jean Dubuffet previously located in front of the Helmut Jahn designed James R. Thompson Center in the Loop community area of Chicago, Illinois. Its location was across the street from Chicago City Hall to the South and diagonal across the street from the Daley Center to the southeast.
The sculpture was given to Lincoln Park by Martin Ryerson. It was display in the Lincoln Park Zoo, about one mile south of the current location, until 1974.
