The Interpretation of Conflicting Narrations or Treatise on Hadith Differences (Arabic: Ta’wīl Mukhtalif al-Hadīth) is a book written by Ibn Qutaybah (828 – 885 CE / 213 – 276 AH), a renowned Islamic scholar of the Golden Age of Islam, in which he defends and reconciles hadiths that Mu'tazilites and so much later Quranists had dismissed as contradictory or irrational.
The hadith, including its isnād, is free of ʻillah (hidden detrimental flaw or flaws, e.g. the establishment that two narrators, although contemporaries, could not have shared the hadith, thereby breaking the isnād.) The hadith is free of irregularity, meaning that it does not contradict another hadith already established (accepted).
Some of them are, according to Al-Suyuti, ḍa‘īf, ḥasan or even ṣaḥīḥ. [ 1 ] Ahmad ibn Ali Ibn Hajar al-Asqalani (d.1449) contends, however, that the majority of the narrations in this book are, in fact, fabricated and that those narrations criticized as not actually being fabricated are very few in comparison.
