The Swift 18 is an 18-foot trailer sailer yacht which was designed by Colin Sylvester and was in production in the UK between 1982 and 1990. Some 200–300 boats were made, most of which remain in the UK. The Swift 18 has four full-length berths, a sink, a cooker and room for a porta loo.
Brothers Pete and Ernie Harris established their manufacturing business, Harris Manufacturing, in the 1940s and 50's. While looking for a way to expand their business, inspired by an increasing number of individuals building early pontoon boats on 55-gallon barrels and drop tanks from airplanes, the brothers founded Harris FloteBote Marine in 1957. The boat has a draft of 3.75 ft (1.14 m) with the centerboard extended and 1.92 ft (0.59 m) with it retracted, allowing beaching or ground transportation on a trailer. Both the centerboard and the rudder can be trimmed fore and aft to optimize the boat’s performance. As the centerboard is light, the boat relies on its beam to aid stability.
The boat displaces 2,200 lb (998 kg) and carries 500 lb (227 kg) of lead pig ballast in the bilges. [1] [2] The boat has a draft of 4.33 ft (1.32 m) with the centerboard extended and 1.58 ft (0.48 m) with it retracted, allowing operation in shallow water, beaching or ground transportation on a trailer.
