The Monkey King, also known as The Lost Empire, is a 2001 television miniseries produced by NBC and the SciFi Channel. It is a contemporary take on the classic 16th-century novel Journey to the West. It stars Bai Ling, Thomas Gibson, Russell Wong, Eddie Marsan, and Randall Duk Kim.

Monkey (孫悟空, Son Gokū), the title character, is described in the theme song as being "born from an egg on a mountain top", a stone egg, and thus he is a stone monkey, a skilled fighter who becomes a brash king of a monkey tribe, who, the song goes on to claim, was "the punkiest monkey that ever popped". The elephant responds to the challenge with a loud trumpet, and the (relatively) smaller animal is not hesitant to charge, making his move, but the much smarter elephant anticipates the attack by charging too and dodging. The rhinoceros returns and tries to stab the elephant's throat, but he is too tall, even with his four-foot horn.
