Kagome wants to keep her promise to Kikyo instead and to make a correct wish over the Shikon Jewel. Inuyasha vows to protect Kagome, and they almost kiss passionately, but are interrupted by the sudden return of her family. Ten days later, Kagome goes on her way by train to take her entrance exams, but is persistently followed by Inuyasha.

Kagome overcomes her bitterness towards Kikyo. Inuyasha and the others find her, and they interrogate The Infant as being the human heart of Naraku. The Infant departs after repelling Inuyasha's attempted attack. Inuyasha later discovers how dangerous his deep and strong affections for Kikyo are for Kagome.
Originally faceless and without memory of his past, Onigumo took the face and name of a wandering monk. Eventually with Kagura watching on Naraku's order, Muso ventures to Kikyo's former village and regains his memories of Onigumo and desires for Kikyo. He sees Kagome with Inuyasha and, assuming she is Kikyo, fights him in order to possess Kagome.
Inuyasha, Kagome, Miroku, Sango and Shippo head to town, where the sacrifice of the firstborns are mercifully offered to an arrogant water god. The four are hired by the village headman's son, Taromaru, to save his friend, Suekichi. Inuyasha, Kagome and Shippo destroy the false water god, while Miroku and Sango search and free the true one.
Menōmaru's mind-control curse on Kagome possesses her, and she is forced to pursue and kill Inuyasha, who notices her wearing Kikyo's style of clothing. After realizing what Menōmaru did to her and choosing to face the controlled Kagome at the Sacred Tree, she shoots him with a sacred arrow in the same manner that Kikyo had done.
Kikyo leaves Inuyasha, when Kagome recovers her soul. Miroku, a lecherous monk, recruits Hachiemon, a tanuki demon, to help him steal the shard. When Inuyasha and Kagome find him in a town, they run to the outskirts to avoid endangering the townspeople. Miroku uses his wind tunnel against Inuyasha, who is saved when Kagome leaps between them.
Inuyasha and his friends venture to the Forbidden Mountain, in hopes of finding Saint Hijiri. Unfortunately, Naraku's demons are an obstacle for them. Inuyasha sees an image of Kikyo before she disappears. Kagome crosses a barrier and finds a fatally wounded and unconscious Kikyo near the waterfall.
