The 17 or 34 that I buy will pretty much just be a "Fun Gun" to take to the range and compete on occasion with. I won't say I have drank all the Glock kool-aid yet, but, since buying my Glock, I have really become enamored with the basic design, simplicity and functionality of them. This was my first modern firearm I'd ever owned.
I have a Glock 34 Gen 3 with over 50,000 rounds through it and the trigger action is so well broken in that it feel like cheating. 5. Do not under estimate the difference that ammunition preference makes from one gun to the next. I have a Gen 5 34 that groups extraordinarily well with Wolf 115 grain ammo, 2" groups from a rest at 25 yards.
The Glock 34 is an excellent gun. If I had to recommend two Glocks it would be the 19 for carry and the 34 for paper. Tho nothing is stopping you from carrying the 34 too. I put a Dawson fiber optic adjustable and a Vogel trigger on mine and its so much fun to shoot I find myself not using enough range time for other guns.
I settled for a Glock 34. Both guns have the 3.5 pound connector, and while the 17L has the length (giggity), the 34 is ready to go out of the box with and adjustable sight for those of us still using irons. I never felt any regret from settling for the 34. Glock's recent spurt of 17Ls has reinvigorated my interest in the gun, so I ordered one.

The only competition style shooting i have done up to this point is a 3 gun league that is basically just for practice/fun but I always preform pretty well. In the next month or 2 I plan to buy a glock 34 mos gen 5 and I was hoping you guys may be able to help me determine the best set up for it and answer a few questions I had.
Gen5.34 mos with a delta point pro is super accurate. One hole 10yds in. Also have a Gen4.34 with Trijicon HDs. It shoots almost as good off rest. But I always get my feelings hurt when I shoot offhand with same pistols. Shoot off of a rest or bag of some kind at 10yds. That should answer your question.
I'm still coveting a Glock 34, although I've yet to find one in stock. I'm curious--given that the G34 is preferred for IPSC and IDPA competition-style shooting, why is the G17 preferred by police/military as a tactical weapon? I mean, the G34 seems to shoot faster, is more accurate, etc.
