The Making of a Fresco Showing the Building of a City (1931) is one of four fresco murals in the San Francisco Bay Area painted by Mexican artist Diego Rivera. [2] Rivera's mural seems to be painted for and about a working class audience. [3]
As of 2019, the exhibition center (one of San Francisco's largest single-story buildings) is used as a venue for events such as weddings or trade fairs. [7] Conceived to evoke a decaying ruin of ancient Rome, [1] the Palace of Fine Arts became one of San Francisco's most recognizable landmarks. [8]
It is also where the 1951 Treaty of San Francisco (the peace treaty that officially ended the Pacific War with the Empire of Japan, which had surrendered in 1945) was signed. The San Francisco Civic Center was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1987 [6] and listed in the National Register of Historic Places on October 10, 1978. [4]
