A Modest Proposal for Preventing the Children of Poor People from Being a Burthen to Their Parents or Country, and for Making Them Beneficial to the Publick, [1] commonly referred to as A Modest Proposal, is a Juvenalian satirical essay written and published by Anglo-Irish writer and clergyman Jonathan Swift in 1729.
His deadpan, ironic writing style, particularly in A Modest Proposal, has led to such satire being subsequently termed "Swiftian". [3] He is best remembered for his satirical book Gulliver's Travels, first published in 1726. He is regarded by the Encyclopædia Britannica as, "the foremost prose satirist in the English language."
