The Austral 20 is a 20 ft (6.1 m) long trailer sailer, designed and manufactured in Australia by Austral Yachts in Adelaide. [1] [2] The boats feature roller reefing jibs and slab reefing mains as standard. [3] The Austral 20 is a roomy and easy to sail design, for which Austral Yachts won a design award in 1979.

The standard payloads of roll trailers vary from 40 to 120 tons, and the tare of the trailer varies from 7 to 10 tons.
A conventional ladder frame has a front steering axle with a 12,000 lb (5,400 kg) weight rating and tandem rear axles with a 40,000 lb (18,000 kg) weight rating. The truck can have a maximum weight of 52,000 lb (24,000 kg), including a 30,000 lb (14,000 kg) load. The total weight rating of the truck and trailer is 105,000 lb (48,000 kg).
Some sidelifters have a telescopic chassis, sometimes called trombone chassis, allowing the unit to expand and contract in order to accommodate 20 ft, 40 ft or even 45 ft containers. These Trombone units are specially suited for small secondary roads where cornering is quite difficult with 40 ft trailers.
A longer TOFC (trailer on flat car) is usually an 89 ft (27.13 m) car. In the past, these carried three 30 ft (9.14 m) trailers which are, as of 2007, almost obsolete, or one large, 53 ft (16.15 m), two 40-foot (12.19 m) or 45-foot (13.72 m) trailers. As intermodal traffic grows, these dedicated flats are in decline.
