In 1990, an additional 1.4 acres (5,700 m 2) was purchased from A. Wannamaker. Many buildings which are still in use at the park, as well as the 300-acre (1.2 km 2) lake, were built by the Civilian Conservation Corps. [5] It is the oldest State Park in the South Carolina Park System and the largest originating from the CCC. [6]
The state park is located on Desportes Island on Lake Wateree, 17 miles from Winnsboro, SC and 14 miles from Ridgeway, SC. The 283-acre (1.15 km 2 ) site was acquired by the state in 1984 and offers 100 camping sites, picnic pads, an on-site tackle shop with boat refueling, and a 2-mile-long nature trail.
