The construction of the palace was completed in 1698 (Nepal Sambat 818) during the reign of Bhupatindra Malla. [20] [21] The current façade of the palace dates from 1856 when the eastern part of the palace was demolished by Dhir Shumsher Rana, who after a trip to Britain, commissioned a British style building named "Lāl Baithak" in its place.
