Artificial decking products are often called "wood-plastic composites" (WPC). WPCs have different brands like NewTechWood, Azek, Ecornboard etc. [1] Historically, the softwoods used for decking were logged from old growth forests. These include Atlantic white cedar, redwood, and western red cedar (redcedar).
Composite deck boards are sold in either grooved or solid sided versions. The grooved composite board is fastened with hidden deck fasteners or clips, while the solid board is typically face-screwed. Most composite deck board manufacturers produce lengths of 12, 16, or 20 feet (3.7, 4.9, or 6.1 m), 5 + 1 ⁄ 2 by 3 ⁄ 4 inch (140 mm × 19 mm).
PVC decking is composed entirely of polyvinyl chloride (PVC) and contains no wood. [1] PVC decking is a more expensive option in the alternative decking industry, but it provides significant fade and stain resistance and lower maintenance requirements compared to other products, including real teak wood.

In addition to wood fiber and plastic, WPCs can also contain other ligno-cellulosic and/or inorganic filler materials. WPCs are a subset of a larger category of materials called natural fiber plastic composites (NFPCs), which may contain no cellulose-based fiber fillers such as pulp fibers, peanut hulls, coffee husk, bamboo, straw, digestate, etc.
The traditional decking material is pressure-treated wood. The current material many contractors choose to use is composite decking. This material is typically made from wood–plastic composite or fiberglass reinforced plastic (FRP). Such materials do not warp, crack, or split and are as versatile as traditional pressure treated wood.
