But passenger service to the city dwindled in the mid-20th century and stopped altogether in 1977, when Amtrak ended its Mountaineer train.
Staunton station is an Amtrak train station in Staunton, Virginia, located in the downtown Wharf Area Historic District of the city. It is served by Amtrak's Cardinal , which runs between New York and Chicago .

As of May 2023 there are four daily routes that terminate at Washington Union Station, with stops at a few other Amtrak Virginia stations. [13] [14]
The cross-state bus line won’t start until 2025, and the department couldn’t say what a ticket would cost. This is the first line on the Virginia Breeze’s schedule to connect to Hampton Roads. Four existing routes run from cities in southwest Virginia up to Washington D.C. [8]
