Construction on the Church of St. Michael the Archangel began in 1914 for what would grow to become the largest anglophone parish in Montreal. [4] After a brief delay following the commencement of World War I, the church was completed in 1915 at a cost of $232,000 (equivalent to $5,974,951 in 2023), with a capacity of 1,400 people.
St. Michael's parish was founded by the Rev. Demetrius Gallitzin and it was named for the patron saint of Michael McGuire, who was the first settler in the area in 1788. [1] The parish has had four different church buildings in its history. The first church was built of white pine logs in 1799. The second church was a frame structure built in 1817.
In 1907, the present St. Michael the Archangel Roman Catholic Church was built on what is now known today as Pulaski Street. [1] [3] The architect for the church was George P. B. Alderman of Holyoke, Massachusetts who also designed Sacred Heart Church, New Britain, CT.
The congregation was founded in 1881 as a mission of Ohio City, Cleveland's St. Mary's on-the-Flats to serve a growing German immigrant population on Cleveland's west side. The original church and school building were constructed in 1883 but burned on June 29, 1891, while the new building was under construction.
