FPWA was originally named the Federation of Institutions Caring for Protestant Children. It was founded in response to a request in 1920 from the Commissioner of the New York City Department of Public Welfare, seeking representatives of religious social welfare organizations to form an advisory committee across the country.
In 1972, an 1,100-seat sanctuary was opened, and in 1978, Knox Hall, the Calvin Room, and Children's and Student ministry spaces were completed. Ward also planted three daughter churches: Trinity Presbyterian Church in Plymouth in 1979, Grace Chapel in Farmington Hills in 1983, and Cornerstone Presbyterian Church in Brighton in 1986. [1]
Transylvania Presbytery was established in 1786 from part of Abingdon Presbytery, encompassed all of Kentucky, settlements on the Cumberland River in Tennessee, and later the settlements on the Great Miami River and Little Miami River in Ohio.
In 1976, Adair was elected as a Moderator of the General Assembly for the Presbyterian Church, the first black woman to attain this role, travelling to 115 countries during her term. She was one of the original founders of Presbyterian Senior Services, and was a participant with the Fellowship of the "Least Coin", a worldwide prayer movement.
The church was founded on February 13, 1949, with 282 charter members. [1] [6] The Presbyterian Board of Missions, seeing the Prairie Village area as one of the fastest-growing regions in the country without a United Presbyterian denomination, invested a $100,000 to construct a parsonage and a church.
Senior Pastor Dr. Earl F. Palmer said of the organ: "In this house of worship we call University Presbyterian Church, that gift of great and tender sound is ours. Tears still well up in my eyes when I hear its subtlety and grandeur." [10] Earl Palmer was senior pastor for 15 years, following Bruce Larson and preceding George Hinman. [11]
