The truth frees Jace and Clary from the torture of having seemingly incestuous feelings for each other, allowing them to accept their mutual feelings and become a "real" couple. By Lady Midnight, the first book in the third series (The Dark Artifices) of Shadowhunters, Jace has proposed to Clary. They are 23 and 24 respectively.
Clary calls Isabelle for help in capturing Jonathan. When she arrives with Jace and some shadowhunters, Clary attacks Jonathan and pins him to the ground, but due to both the reluctance she has of their bond and something that is holding her back, Clary unwittingly lets him go. The encounter gives Jonathan hope that Clary will eventually join him.
Clary, Izzy, and Alec respond to a distress call from the Silent City but arrive too late. Clary frees Jace using an amplified version of the opening rune that appears to her amidst her panic. The Inquisitor appears, along with a group of armed Shadowhunters, and accuses Jace of helping Valentine.
The trio escapes to the Shadowhunter Institute, a hidden cathedral-like building, where Jace treats Clary, who was stung by the demon. She and Simon meet two other Shadowhunters, siblings Alec and Isabelle Lightwood, and Shadowhunter leader, Hodge. Invisible to mortals, Shadowhunters are half-human, half-angel demon slayers.
Clary is thrown into the world of demon hunting with the mysterious, narcissistic, and attractive Shadowhunters Jace, Isabelle and Alec and drags her loyal and geeky friend Simon along for the ride. Now living amongst the fair folk, warlocks, vampires, and werewolves, Clary begins a journey of self-discovery as she learns more about her past ...
Jace proves that Clary has Nephilim blood by touching her with a stele, which leaves her unharmed. All Nephilim are unharmed by steles, weapons used to mark Shadowhunters with angelic runes that give them their powers. Returning to the house, Jace and Clary meet neighbour Madame Dorothea, who has a teleportation portal.
Clary runs to the Accords Hall to persuade the Clave not to surrender to Valentine. She introduces a new rune, called Alliance, which allows Shadowhunters and Downworlders to share each others powers. During the decision process, Jocelyn informs Clary that Jace isn't actually her biological brother but, rather, Sebastian is.
Clary then goes to the Church of Talto and fights a Hydra demon with the help of Isabelle. Later, Jace and Clary share an intimate moment in the Institute. On the point of taking a further step in their relationship, Jace injures Clary with a knife. Jace breaks down and reveals why he was avoiding Clary.
