The Chattooga remains one of the few free-flowing streams in the Southeast and is known for its white water rafting and scenery. The city lies along the Chattooga River at the western base of the Taylor Ridge. U.S. Route 27 connects Summerville with Chattanooga, Tennessee, to the north, and Rome to the southeast.
