Merit badges are awards earned by members of the Boy Scouts of America, based on activities within the area of study by completing a list of periodically updated requirements. [1] The purpose of the merit badge program is to allow Scouts to examine subjects to determine if they would like to further pursue them as a career or vocation.
The badge is awarded when the Scout completes requirements in the areas of Scoutcraft, physical fitness, citizenship, personal growth and Scout Spirit. At this point, Scouts shift focus from learning physical Scouting method to start developing leadership skills. [4] Originally, First Class was the all around Scout and the final and highest rank.
Tenderfoot, [6] Second Class [7] and First Class [8] have progressively harder requirements in the areas of Scoutcraft, physical fitness, citizenship, personal growth and Scout Spirit. Focus turns toward individual achievement, leadership and community service once First Class is earned.
In others, the merit badge's name has been changed, with or without significant revision to the badge's requirements. In 2010, in celebration of Scouting's 100th anniversary , four historical merit badges were reintroduced for one year only—Carpentry, Pathfinding, Signaling, and Tracking (formerly Stalking).
