The Lofoten Islands are characterised by their mountains and peaks, sheltered inlets, stretches of seashore and large virgin areas. The highest mountain in Lofoten is Higravstinden (1,161 metres (3,809 feet)) in Austvågøy; the Møysalen National Park just northeast of Lofoten has mountains reaching 1,262 metres (4,140 feet).
The weather station is located at the small Leknes Airport. The all-time high is 29.9 °C (85.8 °F) recorded July 2018, and the all-time low is −15.8 °C (3.6 °F) from February 2019. Winters get abundant precipitation in Leknes. Summers are much drier with only 25 % of the winter precipitation.
Svolvær is located in the Lofoten archipelago on the southern coast of the island of Austvågøya, facing the open sea of the Vestfjorden to the south, and with mountains immediately to the north. The most famous mountain, Svolværgeita , had its first recorded climb in 1910.
It is located not far from the Arctic Circle on the island of Moskenesøya in the Lofoten archipelago. Lofotodden National Park was established on 22 June 2018. The Lofoten area is the spawning grounds for the northern Atlantic cod. When spawning season begins, it creates an extreme increase in the activity of the fishing industry. A result of the "Lofotfiske" event, a great need for storage arises, as the fish is processed and cured in large amounts. This led to the drying and salting of fish.
In the rest of the Norwegian Sea, it is found only during the reproduction season, at the Lofoten Islands, [25] whereas Pollachius virens and haddock spawn in the coastal waters. [8] Mackerel is an important commercial fish. The coral reefs are populated by different species of the genus Sebastes. [24]
