[1] His father, Alexander Herman Hermanus Kawilarang, was a major in the Royal Netherlands East Indies Army (KNIL or Koninklijk Nederlands Indisch Leger). [2] His mother was Nelly Betsy Mogot. [3] Both parents were from the Minahasa region in North Sulawesi.
