Cordula of Cologne, also known as Saint Cordula, is an apocryphal saint. She was venerated in the Catholic Church as a companion of St. Ursula and her feast day was on 22 October, but she has not been listed in the Roman Martyrology since 1969 due to doubts about her historicity.
In 1966 the Academy of St. Ursula became John A. Coleman Catholic High School, which in 1968 moved to a larger campus in Hurley. In 1968 the sisters established the Linwood Spiritual Center retreat house in Rhinebeck, New York. In 1984 the Society arrived in the Diocese of Raleigh (North Carolina) where sisters serve in Wilmington and Jacksonville.
In New York City, in 1873, James Boyce (1826–1876) invited the Ursuline nuns to found a girls' academy in St. Teresa's parish on Manhattan's Lower East Side. The new school, called St. Teresa's Ursuline Academy, located at 137 Henry Street, was incorporated in 1881 and as of 1891 had a faculty of five sisters teaching 62 pupils. [ 25 ]
Dionotus, Saint Ursula's father, in a 1495 painting by Vittore Carpaccio Dionotus was a legendary king of Cornwall in Geoffrey of Monmouth's Historia regum Britanniae, an account of the rulers of Britain based on ancient Welsh sources and disputed by many historians.
It shows the Virgin Mary with Saint Catherine, Saint Cecilia, Saint Ursula, and Saint Barbara in holy communion, or Virgo inter Virgines. [2] The painting is undated, but based on compositional details has been considered a "late work" by the master and therefore dates to the 1490s. [ 2 ]
