The Burra Burra Mine is a copper mine located in Ducktown, Tennessee, in the southeastern United States.Named for the famous mine in Australia, the Burra Burra Mine is located in the Copper Basin geological region, and extracted over 15 million tons (14 million metric tons) of copper ore during its 60 years of operation between 1899 and 1959.
In 1858 three companies, the Union Consolidated Mining Company, the Burra Burra Copper Company, and the Ducktown Copper Company, were formed to operate different mines in the basin and consolidate the small companies that operated these mines. [23] A total of nine separate ore deposits were discovered and worked within the basin.
Ducktown is located in a geological region known as the Copper Basin, and was the center of a major copper-mining district from 1847 until 1987. The district also produced iron, sulfur and zinc as byproducts. [7] Ducktown was the birthplace of Rockabilly Hall of Famer, Stan Beaver. [citation needed]
Copper was discovered in Ducktown in 1843. By the 1850s, a large mining operation was underway in southeastern Polk County; the area became known as the Copper Basin . This operation continued until 1987, when the last mine closed.
