The church has a west tower with diagonal buttresses and carved obelisk pinnacles, a two light belfry and a lead-clad spire. There is a heavy nave with aisle parapets. [ 2 ] The lychgate, officially opened on 26 June 1949 as a memorial to the dead of the two World Wars, was listed at Grade II in 1976.
It is possible that the church was the focus of settlement activity at this period extending into the later medieval. [2] The renowned civil engineer John Smeaton was born in the local parish of Austhorpe and is buried in Whitkirk churchyard. [3]
John Smeaton FRS (8 June 1724 – 28 October 1792) was an English civil engineer responsible for the design of bridges, canals, harbours and lighthouses. [1] He was also a capable mechanical engineer and an eminent physicist. Smeaton was the first self-proclaimed "civil engineer", and is often regarded as the "father of civil engineering". [2]

The church, which is in Perpendicular style, was restored in 1855–56, and the chancel was extended in 1901 by G. F. Bodley. The church is built in stone, and consists of a nave with a clerestory , north and south aisles , a south porch, a chancel , north and south chapels, and a west tower.
Simon was daughter of the vicar at Whitkirk, where Smeaton was a parishioner. Eastburn and his wife had one daughter, Elizabeth. [5] Eastburn's will was written in December 1812, bequeathing his estate to his wife (or, in the event of her predeceasing him, his then-recently widowed daughter).
