The single-snorkel air intake used since 1976 was changed to a dual-snorkel set-up on L82 equipped cars helping to boost that output to 220 hp (164 kW). L82 engines were also now fitted with an aluminum intake manifold which saved 24 pounds compared to the cast iron unit of previous years.
It offers the airflow of more expensive heads, at a much lower cost. It does, however, require a specific intake manifold (the L31 has four bolts per head attaching the intake manifold, as opposed to the "traditional" six bolts per head found on older Chevrolet small-blocks). Chevrolet's L31 was replaced by GM's LS-based 5.3L LM7 and 6.0L LQ4.

Introduced in 1960, the 351 was available as a C series, an E series (351E), and Magnum series (351M). The E and M series featured a larger two-barrel carburetor and an open port intake, bigger intake and exhaust ports, larger diameter valves, and larger exhaust manifolds.
