Evergreen is an unincorporated community and census-designated place (CDP) in Tatums Township, Columbus County, North Carolina, United States. It lies on North Carolina Highway 242, north of U.S. Route 74 and NC 130, at an elevation of 108 feet (33 m). The population was 420 at the 2010 census. [4]
Multiple shops dot the main highway, serving a tourist clientele. Its development, since the 1980s, is thanks to year-round tourism to nearby attractions, notably Grandfather Mountain. Historically, the East Tennessee and Western North Carolina Railroad (Nicknamed "Tweetsie") passed through the area until flooding destroyed the tracks in 1940.
Deals Gap (el. 1,988 ft (606 m)) is a mountain pass along the North Carolina–Tennessee state line, bordering the Great Smoky Mountains National Park and near the Little Tennessee River. At 0.7 miles (1.1 km) south of the gap is the unincorporated community that shares the same name, located at the intersection of US 129 and NC 28.
