It is a radiographic term for the enlargement of mediastinal lymph nodes and is most commonly identified by a chest x-ray.

In active pulmonary TB, infiltrates or consolidations and/or cavities are often seen in the upper lungs with or without mediastinal or hilar lymphadenopathy. [1] However, lesions may appear anywhere in the lungs. In HIV and other immunosuppressed persons, any abnormality may indicate TB or the chest X-ray may even appear entirely normal. [1]
One or more lung nodules can be an incidental finding found in up to 0.2% of chest X-rays [3] and around 1% of CT scans. [ 4 ] The nodule most commonly represents a benign tumor such as a granuloma or hamartoma , but in around 20% of cases it represents a malignant cancer , [ 4 ] especially in older adults and smokers .
