An earmold (also spelled; ear mold, ear mould or earmould) is a device worn inserted into the ear for sound conduction or hearing protection. Earmolds are anatomically shaped and can be produced in different sizes for general use or specially cast from particular ear forms. [ 1 ]
The ear is washed and a small incision made in the eardrum. Any fluid that is present is then aspirated, the tube of choice inserted, and the ear packed with cotton to control any slight bleeding that might occur. This is known as conventional (or cold knife) myringotomy and usually heals in one to two days. [13]
Ear cups are usually lined with a sound-absorbing material, such as foam. The cups should be fit so that the center of the ear canal aligns with the ear canal opening. [1] The soft cushions seal around the pinna of the ears. The head band, centered at the top of the head, applies force/pressure to seal the ear cups over the ears. [1]
Plugs are commonly, and have historically, been worn in the ears. They can, however, be inserted into any piercing. In order for a plug to stay put within a piercing, the ends of its cylindrical shape are often flared out, or the plug is fastened in place by O-rings. Combinations of these two methods may also be used.
