Hedgeman learned how to read at home but was not permitted to attend school until she was seven years old. [3] In 1918, Hedgeman graduated from Anoka High School and continued her education at Hamline University, a Methodist College in Saint Paul, Minnesota. She was the college’s first African-American student.
The second Anoka High School was opened in 1955, a few blocks southeast of downtown Anoka, with the old location becoming Sandburg Middle School. The current building opened in 1971, and the old high school became Fred Moore Junior High School (later Fred Moore Middle School, and now Anoka Middle School for The Arts).
