According to the United States Census Bureau, the township has a total area of 42.7 square miles (110.6 km 2), of which 37.4 square miles (96.8 km 2) is land and 5.3 square miles (13.8 km 2), or 12.45%, is water. [3] Rush Lake is a large two-basin water body in the center of the township.
Rush Lake is in the general shape of a gourd, covering an area of 5,338 acres (21.60 km 2) and reaching a maximum depth of 68 feet (21 m). Despite the said maximum depth, most of the lake is rather shallow with 62 percent of the lake less than 15 feet (4.6 m) in depth.
