Luffy's crew soon arrives in Dressrosa and, entering the tournament under the alias "Lucy", he gets to the final round. Recognizing Luffy, Sabo reminisces about their shared childhood: Sabo and Ace refuse to befriend Luffy, but change their mind after he is kidnapped by a pirate and beaten for refusing to give away the location of their treasure.
The story follows the adventures of Monkey D. Luffy, a boy whose body gained the properties of rubber after unintentionally eating a Devil Fruit. Luffy sees Smoker on the ground. Tashigi cries over Smoker's body and attempts to kill Law but he switches their hearts. Meanwhile, the kids from the lab complain about the cold so the samurai uses his devil fruit to give the kids and the Straw Hats warm clothes. Luffy's group then meets up with the other group behind the lab.
The remaining 4 episodes give insight into the fates of Luffy's crew, while Luffy with Hancock's help, who fell in love with him, travels to Impel Down, the world's largest prison, to save his adoptive older brother, Portgas D. Ace, from execution. The season initially ran from July 5 through October 11, 2009 on Fuji Television in Japan.
A flashback of Luffy's life is shown. Ten years before Luffy's journey, Garp takes his grandson to Mt. Corvo. While there, they meet mountain bandit Curly Dadan, along with her henchmen Magra and Dogra. Dadan also reveals about Ace who was adopted by her. While in the jungle, Luffy encounters more mountain bandits and eats their meat to his dismay.
