A wide variety of comedies, totalling 500 films, were nominated for the distinction; genres included slapstick, action comedy, screwball comedy, romantic comedy, satire, black comedy, musical comedy, comedy of manners, and comedy of errors.
The Gold Diggers is a Warner Bros. silent comedy film directed by Harry Beaumont with screenplay by Grant Carpenter [2] based on the play The Gold Diggers by Avery Hopwood which ran for 282 performances on Broadway in 1919 and 1920. Both the play and the film were produced by David Belasco.
Bumping into Broadway was the first of a nine two-reel picture deal Harold Lloyd made with Pathé Exchange in April 1919. And even though Pathé was eager to release his first two-reel comedy featuring the "glasses" character, the company wanted to release all of the remaining one-reelers first.
